Steve Jobs

This is to keep up with the immense hype about Steve Jobs on every corner of the internet. Steve Jobs quotes are flooding my dashboard.

I don’t like Apple. In fact, I never liked Apple at all, except for my iPod nano I bought 5 years ago. To me, Apple gadgets are overrated and overpriced. There are cheaper and better alternatives out there. I don’t agree with their business model. Ripping off consumers is not a good thing. It’s true, they have done a great job designing the products and marketing it — making it ‘cool’ in the eyes of many. And when they’ve got that customer loyalty, everything they release will sell. That’s why they capitalize on this and render every gadget obsolete in a year. I don’t agree with this at all, it is not respecting consumers.

So who is Steve Jobs? He was Apple’s CEO until he resigned in late August. He revived the Apple that was about to go bankrupt and helped it to become the Apple you see today. He was certainly a good CEO. He focuses on user experience, and he was bold enough to introduce new things into the market. He was responsible for making the company run in the right direction. He knew how to make something that consumers will want, and he did it. A good CEO and marketing person indeed. I look up to him for that.

Beside his contributions to Apple and his influence to the popular culture today through Apple, I knew nothing more about the man. And I doubt many people know more than I do. He was a marketing genius? True. But was he a great person inside and out? Who knows. Was he a great philanthropist? No. Did he piss his employees off everyday? Did he act nice to everyone? Did he pay his employees enough? I don’t know. So I’m not going to say he is legendary, or a genius, or a great man of our times. He was just a great CEO with great vision on how to run his business. To say anything more, I believe, will be blowing things out of proportion.

My condolences to Steve Jobs’ family.

On a side note, many good lives were lost this year. First, The Honourable Jack Layton. Then, Ralph Steinman. And now, Steve Jobs. All because of cancer.
